• • 2 min read

The SPLM Secretary-General, Pagan Amum, says a final peace agreement to end the current conflict may be signed before the 9th of July.

Mr Pagan took oath of office on Tuesday after more than a year as a former political detainee in exile.

He was suspended from his position as the party secretary-general a few months before the conflict erupted in December 2013.

Mr Pagan told Eye Radio that he will work to ensure that the government and the SPLM in Opposition sign a final peace agreement before the Independence Day.

“The first national priority today is stopping this war, the devastating war that has been raging in South Sudan,” Mr Amum said.

“Towards this, we shall be working to engage the two warring parties towards signing a comprehensive agreement that will end this war and usher South Sudan into peace.”

From Nairobi, he returned to Juba on Monday to follow up the implementation of the Arusha Agreement to reunite the party.

He led a delegation of former political detainees that include former Cabinet Affairs Minister Deng Alor and former Finance Minister Kosti Manibe.

The SPLM Secretary-General traveled to Nairobi, Kenya, yesterday. He’s on an official assignment.
