Food prices shoot up in WBGS

Author : | Published: Sunday, July 7, 2013

Prices of goods in Wau, capital of Western Bahr El-Ghazal State, have shot up again as the second anniversary of the independence approaches.

The Chamber of Commerce in the State says the price hike is due to excessive road charges and heavy taxes traders pay.

Last year, prices of goods in Wau dropped following the announcement of the re-opening of the borders between South Sudan and Sudan.

In October, Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir ordered the re-opening of land, air and river border crossings with South Sudan.

However, the chairman of the state’s Chamber of Commerce, Wol Charles, told Eye Radio that although there are plenty of goods in the markets, only that prices are shooting up rapidly.

“The prices of goods are shooting up because of high road charges and taxes, but we have every kind of goods, food and non-food items in the markets.”

Mr. Wol Charles said the Chamber of Commerce will meet with the Wau Municipality after the celebrations of the second anniversary of the independence, to hold discussions on how to tackle the rising prices of goods in the state markets.
