At least four people were allegedly killed during violent clashes in Panyijiar County, Unity State yesterday, according to Director General at state the Ministry of Information.
The incident, which reportedly began around 2:30 p.m. on 3 December, involved a confrontation between forces loyal to the newly appointed commissioner by the acting SPLM-IO chairman, Mr. Oyet Nataniel, and those supporting the incumbent commissioner, Majok Bol.
Last month, Mr. Oyet appointed Col. Stephen Gai Riak as commissioner of Panyijiar County, replacing Col. Majok Bol Chuol.
Gore Gatluak, Director General of the Ministry of Information in Unity State, said the clashes started in Thiap Payam.
He added that the fighting appears to have stemmed from disagreements over the appointment of the new commissioner.
According to the Ministry, four people have died, including individuals associated with the commissioner and the police, while one person has allegedly been wounded.
Gatluak told Eye Radio that authorities are still investigating and have not yet identified the individuals responsible.
He said the government is dispatching teams to the area to protect residents and restore calm.
Panyijiar County is primarily under SPLM-IO control, although SPLM members also hold certain positions, including that of executive director.
Gatluak stated that apart from the Panyijiar incident, the security situation across Unity State reportedly remains stable.
