Govt to establish ICT authority to boost digital services and data protection

The Minister of Information, Ateny Wek Ateny, says the government is planning to establish an Information and Communication Technology Authority (ICT Authority) to strengthen the country’s digital and communication sector.

Once established, the ICT Authority is expected to manage national digital infrastructure, enforce technology standards, and lead public sector digital transformation to improve the delivery of online government services to citizens.

According to Minister Ateny, who also serves as Government Spokesperson, the Data Protection Act will be operationalized once the ICT Authority is formally established.

“In few days or weeks to come we may be establishing the ICT authority in the country because the law is now out already and it has been signed by the president. When the ICT authority is established then the data protection act will be out and all these institutions will be operating under the ICT authority,” he said.

Ateny made the remarks during the ongoing Media and Security Conference held in Juba to mark World Press Freedom Day.
