JUBA, South Sudan (Eye Radio) – The University of Juba has launched a major renovation of its official radio station, aimed at transforming the facility into a modern broadcasting and training hub for students and the community.

The project officially commenced this week following a handover ceremony at the university. Dolphina Roba, Deputy Dean of the School of Journalism, Media, and Communication Studies (SJMCS), welcomed representatives from UNESCO and the contractors who will oversee the refurbishment.

The upgrade includes the complete refurbishment of two radio studios, the installation of state-of-the-art broadcasting equipment, and significant improvements to the station’s production and transmission capacity.

Once finished, the station will serve as a practical laboratory for journalism students. It will provide hands-on experience in radio production, professional reporting, and live broadcasting, bridging the gap between classroom theory and industry practice.

“The upgraded studios will not only enhance learning but also help our students engage meaningfully with their communities through professional media practice,” said Ms. Roba, noting that the renovation marks a new chapter for the university.

The initiative is led by UNESCO with support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) South Sudan. It is part of a national effort to strengthen community and public service media, ensuring citizens have access to reliable information and a platform for open dialogue as the country approaches the electoral period.

UNESCO officials emphasized that by empowering young communicators and strengthening educational institutions, the project contributes to a more informed and engaged society.

The University of Juba’s radio station is a longtime pillar for educational programming. It is expected to resume full operations later this year, offering students a vital platform to amplify their voices on national and community issues.
