Former Vice President Dr Riek Machar should not return to the post of first vice-president of South Sudan, US special envoy to South Sudan and told the US Congress.
“It is not for us to tell South Sudan who its leaders should be,” Ambassador Donald Booth warned. “Given all that has happened, we do not believe it would be wise for Machar to return to his previous position in Juba.”

Dr Machar is now in Khartoum, Sudan, after fleeing deadly fighting between his forces and those of President Kiir in Juba in July.
