Rumbek E. forms courts to try Revenge fights & killings- Lakes

Authorities in Rumbek East County in Lakes State have formed two special courts that will try people who are involved in revenge fights and killing.

The special court is made up of five members, headed by the Paramount chief of the area.

The former chairperson of Constituency Development funds in Lakes State Assembly, Chol Kuotwel says the county authorities have also devised ways of handling those charged with such crimes.

He says the newly established courts are part of reconciliation process among the communities of Rumbek East.

“There is creation of the court, but what was importance and was emphasized in the resolutions is that, those who are killed in normal fighting between the two groups are pay with normal in a normal fight between two groups, are paid at the rate which is 31 cows,” Mr. Kotwel said.

“But those killed in cold blood, for example like this revenge killing that happened in Lakes state, where somebody who does know what is happening and is killed without knowing, that one is raised depending on the cultural law and the law of the country.”

Several people have been killed in revenge fighting in Lakes State.
