The Mayor of Juba City Council has accused some unnamed senior government officials including military generals of impeding ongoing opening of feeder roads in the capital.

One of the developmental mandates of the city council is to widen and rehabilitate feeder roads in the city.

But Kalisto Ladu says field engineers have often come under resistance from some members of the pubic holding government positions.

These incidences, Kalisto says are orchestrated by people who built on the roads.

He cautioned those hindering the work of drastic measures.

“If you are a top government official or a general, please don’t be encouraging evil”, Kalisto Ladu warns.

“For us to build this country, we cannot build a country with compromises, a country is built based on policies and strategies, allow City Council to do its mandate” he stresses.

The city council has so far engaged in opening feeder roads in areas including Malakia, Kator, Atlabara, and Gudele residences.

Members of the public have often complain as to why the city council has not been able to grade the bumpy roads which are full of potholes.

South Sudan has one of the world’s most underdeveloped roads networks. The total estimated track length in the country is approximately 90,200km, which includes approximately 14,000 km of primary and secondary roads, and 6000km of tertiary tracks, according to reports.

The current interstate and international roads network consists of around 5,000km of gravel roads with approximately 300km of sealed roads.

Currently only one international road, the 192km stretch between Juba-Nimule on the Ugandan border is sealed.

The majority of other sealed roads are urban roads within the capital city Juba. All other national, interstate and urban roads consist of badly or non-maintained dirt roads.
