South Sudan marks Volunteer Day

• • 1 min read

South Sudan Red Cross Society says it has about 5,000 volunteers across the country working to delivering services and humanitarian aid.

Today, South Sudan joins the rest of the world in commemorating the International Volunteer Day.

This year’s theme is “You volunteer, make change a reality.”

Marial Mayom, Public Relations and Fundraising officer of the Red Cross, said those volunteers are working in conflict-affected areas.

“That is really good for our people; they’re willing to support the entire population or support South Sudanese for free,” Mr Mayom hailed the volunteers.

“We give them little money that they use as transport fee.”

Volunteer Day is an international observance designated by the United Nations since 1985.

It offers an opportunity for volunteer organizations and individual volunteers to make visible their contributions – at local, national and international levels – to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
