Woman dies in Yei quarrying

Author : | Published: Wednesday, August 28, 2013

A 35-year woman has died after a large rock in a Yei River County quarrying field fell on her.

Speaking to Eye Radio a payam director, Fustine Amba, said the woman was killed as she was removing rocks from the quarry in order to sell them.

“I learned that the woman went on top of the hill to quarry rocks.

“So, at the process of removing a stone – the stone was small but huge rocks were actually hanging loosely towards her – the stone became a little weaker, making rocks to roll on her.”

Fustine Amba advised people to work on the lower levels of the mountain quarry for safety reasons.

Mr. Fustine said that although many working in the quarry were alarmed by the incident, most have returned to work there.

The woman, identified as Mama Pita, has left behind five young children.

Mr. Fustine said Pita had been single-handedly raising her children after divorcing her husband some years ago.
