48-year-old man arrested in Jondoru for impregnating niece

A 48-year-old man is reportedly being held in police custody after he allegedly committed incest in Jondoru – a southwestern suburb of Juba city, the local paramount chief said.

Chief Mary Mas said the man impregnated his niece who is now five-month pregnant.

The pregnancy was detected on June 19, 2023.

Ms. Mas said the suspect she identified by his first name Muzammil, is the blood uncle of the 18-year-old Senior Four school girl.

Mary alleged that the niece in question was living with her uncle when the crime happened.

Muzammil allegedly threatened not to pay her tuition fee if she doesn’t sleep with him.

Speaking to Eye Radio on Monday, Chief Mary confirmed that the suspect has been arrested and is now at the Jebel Market Police station after his brother reported the case.

“Muzammil was arrested and is currently in the police station for practicing incest and causing his sister’s daughter to become pregnant,” she said.

“So, I got up and went two days later to the police station in the Jebel market to make sure of the incident. This girl is currently pregnant in the fifth month, and she said that her uncle forced her to have sex, or he will not pay her school fees,” the chief said.

She added that suspect Muzammil claimed that he committed the crime unintentionally without elaborating on what situation led him to the act.

Muzammil is reportedly married with five children.

The police are yet to comment on the matter.

According to section 268 of the South Sudan 2008 Penal Act, whoever commits sexual intercourse with a person who is or is believed to be his or her daughter, granddaughter, mother, father, brother or sister and his paternal or maternal keens commits the offense of incest.

Upon conviction, he or she is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding seven years or with a fine or with bail.
