Juba Court sentences 16 traders to one month in prison over sanitation violations

Juba Municipal Court has sentenced 16 traders to one month in prison each for violating municipal sanitation regulations, with fines ranging from 200,000 to one million South Sudanese pounds.

According to a Tuesday post on the Juba City Council’s Facebook page, 18 business operators appeared before the court over sanitation violations under the Keep Juba Clean and Green campaign.

The court found 16 traders guilty of environmental non-compliance, while two others were acquitted.

The campaign is part of ongoing efforts by city authorities to improve sanitation, restore urban order and protect public health in the capital.

Under municipal regulations, traders are required to dispose of refuse in appropriate garbage bins and place it at designated collection points for collection by the Juba City Council.

The by-laws prohibit dumping waste inside market areas, along roadsides or in front of business premises.

Section 8 of the amended municipal by-laws provides for fines, imprisonment of up to one month, or both penalties for individuals or businesses found violating sanitation regulations, depending on the court’s decision.

The city authorities have urged business operators to comply with sanitation requirements as enforcement continues under the Keep Juba Clean and Green campaign.
