Chinese peacekeepers deploy anti-drone systems following deadly Abyei attack
Chinese Peacekeeping Quick Reaction Force deployed to Abyei return after deploying counter-UAV equipment to perform continuous detection and jamming, establishing an anti-air security posture to prevent follow-on drone strikes.
According to a statement posted by China’s Ministry of National Defence, the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) ordered the Chinese peacekeepers to reinforce a Pakistani infantry battalion after multiple unidentified drones attacked the market at around 11 a.m. local time on October 19.
Upon arrival, the Chinese task force deployed counter-drone equipment to detect and jam unmanned aerial vehicles, establishing air defences to prevent further strikes.
The peacekeepers also used reconnaissance drones to monitor the market continuously and help protect civilians and other security personnel in the area.
After the situation stabilised, the force maintained a 24-hour armed presence, monitoring the airspace, guarding the perimeter and carrying out defensive duties.
The Chinese ministry said the reinforcement mission had been completed and the task force had returned to its camp.
According to the statement, UNISFA headquarters commended the Chinese peacekeepers for their rapid response and professional handling of the situation, crediting them with helping protect lives and property and maintain stability in the mission area.
