SPLM urges South Sudanese to mobilize resources
The ruling SPLM party in South Sudan has urged South Sudanese across the country to mobilize resources for those affected by the unrest in Greater Upper Nile region.
Thousands of people have been displaced in Jonglei, Unity and Upper Nile states which make up the greater Upper Nile region.
The two weeks violence have also left about 1,000 people dead.
Bol Makueng, the SPLM Secretary of Information and Culture, said the IDPs have no water, food and other basic services.
“We call upon Greater Equatoria and Greater Bahr El Ghazal states to mobilize resources to support humanitarian needs in these three states of Greater Upper Nile which has been devastated by this fighting,” Mr. Makueng said.
The SPLM appealed for peace, reconciliation and prosperity in the New Year.
“May this year 2014 bring us peace so that we build our nation whose foundation has been nourished by the blood of our martyrs,” Mr. Makueng added.
Regional bodies and diplomatic missions in South Sudan have called for an end to the fighting and for the government and former Vice-President Dr. Riek Machar to negotiate a peaceful settlement to the unrest in South Sudan.
The UN estimates that about 180,000 people have been displaced in the country.
