Britain urges warring parties to end the conflict

• • 2 min read

The British Ambassador to South Sudan is urging the warring parties in South Sudan to end the conflict and bring lasting peace to the country.

His remark comes as the country celebrates the third anniversary of the independence today.

In an exclusive statement to Eye Radio, Ambassador Ian Hughes, urged the leader of the SPLM in Opposition, Dr. Riek Machar to end the war and come home.

“To Dr. Riek Machar, I would say come home. The conflict that has torn your country apart is not in anyone’s interest, it is destroying towns, it is destroying lives, and it is not in the interest of your country, and it is not in the interest of your people, and we need to have solutions, you have to talk and the you have to implement the agreements that are made,” said Mr Hughes.

He also assured President Salva Kiir of the support of the international community.

“Difficult decisions are going be taken in the next weeks and months, and we are here to help, but we are not here to impose. It is for the President and the people of South Sudan to make these decisions.”

Ambassador Hughes says the warring parties should enter the next round of talks with determination to bring lasting peace to the country.

Ambassador Ian Hughes added that next year is going to be the most important year for South Sudan, and urged that let the country make good use of it.
