The South Sudan Council of Churches has called for urgent action to protect civilians and prevent further violence after intercommunal fighting in Tonj North County, Warrap State, reportedly killed 61 people on October 27.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, the Council expressed sadness over the reported killings and urged all parties to exercise restraint, reject retaliation and resolve their differences peacefully.

In the statement shared with Eye Radio and signed by General Secretary Rt. Rev. Tut Kony Nyang Kon, the Council said the violence highlights the urgent need to protect civilians, prevent further bloodshed and address the underlying causes of recurring conflict.

The Council called on churches and Christians in South Sudan and abroad to pray for peace and support families affected by the violence.

It said church leaders were working with the Inter-Church Committee on the ground to promote dialogue, encourage restraint and create opportunities for reconciliation.

The Council also urged the Warrap State government and relevant authorities in Tonj North to intervene urgently to stop the violence and protect affected communities.

Political leaders and parties were urged to refrain from using violence for political advantage and to encourage their supporters to resolve disputes through dialogue.

The Council called for accountability for those responsible and stronger peacebuilding and reconciliation efforts among the affected communities.

It said lasting peace would require a collective commitment to justice, mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence.

The reported death toll of 61 was cited in the Council’s statement and has not been independently verified.
