US calls for action on Terrain right violations
The US says the South Sudanese government should act on the report of the Terrain investigation and hold all the perpetrators accountable through a fair and credible process.
On Wednesday, a government committee confirmed that killing, raping, torture and looting took place at Terrain during the violence in Juba in July.
The six-member committee was made up of officials from the judiciary and the security sector.
The chairperson of the committee, Matison Otoromoi said some suspects of looting and rapes had been arrested and were in detention.
Most of the people who were at Terrain were foreign workers, including Americans.
The US now says the perpetrators should be held accountable.
Mark Toner is the Deputy Spokesman at the Department of State. He spoke at a daily press briefing in Washington DC Yesterday.
“First of all, it’s absolutely critical that the South Sudanese Government protect civilians, humanitarian workers, and other international aid workers within its borders,” he said.
“The government should act on the report that was compiled by the Terrain investigation committee and hold all the perpetrators of that violence accountable through a fair and credible process that’s consistent with South Sudan’s international human rights obligations,” he added.
