Gov’t urged to intervene in hiking commodity prices

The Network of Civil Society Organization forum in Yei is calling on the Government to intervene on the increasing prices of goods in the markets.

The chairperson of the organization, Nicolas Sebit says if nothing is done ahead of heavy rains, the high prices will affect lives of the ordinary citizens.

He urged the Government to regulate the high exchange rates of dollars through the banks in order to stabilize the economy of the country.

“Let us look at the issue of the prices shooting up in the current markets in South Sudan. Why the prices of dollar are shooting up is because we don’t have the minimum reserve in the bank.” He said.

“Even the Government is not taking initiative to regulate prices of goods because we don’t have control over our economy. Most of the things in the country are being dominated by foreigners”

Earlier this week, the Chamber of Commerce in Yei said most of the traders are closing down operation due to high exchange rates of dollars in the black market.
