Medical officer shot and wounded at work in Rumbek
A medical officer at Rumbek State Hospital has been shot and wounded in an attempted revenge attack, according to the Caretaker Minister of Information for Lakes State, William Koji Kerjok.
Kerjok said unidentified armed men targeted the medical officer, identified as Mayom Majok, and opened fire on him while he was at work.
“You know that incident is unacceptable to the extent also of shooting an innocent person who does not even involve one day in raiding, who does not even involve in killing. He is just somebody intellectual, somebody on duty within the town,” he explained.
He said Majok sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Rumbek Hospital.
The minister condemned the attack and called on security forces to arrest the suspects, who remain at large.
“You come and shoot him at a place of work, that is very dangerous. Such a thing should not repeat itself, and the security apparatus are apprised to be on alert so that such a situation does not repeat itself,” he said.
Kerjok also urged residents of Lakes State to avoid revenge attacks, road blockades and taking the law into their own hands.
He said disputes and criminal cases should be handled through established legal institutions, including the police and courts, rather than through retaliatory violence.
