NEC identifies 3,161 voter registration centers ahead of December elections
The National Elections Commission (NEC) has identified 3,161 voter registration centres across South Sudan ahead of the December general elections.
NEC Chairperson Gabriel Bol Deng announced the figure during a media workshop organised by the Union of Journalists of South Sudan, with support from the Commission.
He said the Commission was preparing to launch voter registration and had started distributing registration materials and books to states and administrative areas.
“We have 3,161 registration centres. These are the centres we have confirmed across the country. So, it’s a huge number,” Deng said.
He urged journalists to prepare for nationwide deployment to cover the registration exercise, saying their role would be important in informing the public.
Deng also announced that the Commission had passed 14 electoral regulations on Wednesday, following amendments to the National Elections Act in 2023 and 2026.
He did not announce a date for the start of voter registration but said the exercise would continue within the period prescribed by law once launched.
“Voter registration is like a car without a gear. So, when we start the registration, the law says there must be a specific date. So, it has to go continuously until the day the law allows us to stop,” he said.
Deng said peaceful and credible elections required collective responsibility and called on the media to promote peace, tolerance, national unity and democratic participation.
South Sudan is scheduled to hold general elections on 22 December 2026.
