The National Legislative Assembly today ratified the United Nations Convention against Torture and other cruel inhuman punishment.

This means, South Sudan will now work towards ensuring there is no ill treatment of its people, and to promote fundamental freedoms and human dignity in the country.

The convention was ratified after the committee of Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs presented a report on human rights in the country.

Addressing the assembly, the leader of the Minority in the parliament, Hon. Onyoti Adigo said security organs needs to observe such bills passed by the parliament.

“Some of our security organs do not respect this,” he added.

“As far as we are now going to rectify this, I think there is a need for education of our security so that they get to know exactly how they treat their own people.”

Last month, the National Parliament passed UN Convention on the rights of a child to help address issues related to children in South Sudan.
