7 killed, 19 injured in fresh clashes in Tonj South County

At least seven people have been killed, 19 others injured, and several houses burned following violent clashes between communities in Tonj South County, authorities have confirmed.

Speaking to Eye Radio, Warrap State Information Minister Wol Mayom said the violence broke out in the early hours of 2nd June 2026 when suspected armed youth from Manyangok Payam attacked Mabioriar Payam.

“The violence escalated from 5 a.m. up to 10 a.m. and resulted in the loss of seven lives and 19 people wounded from both sides,” Wol said.

“Six households and one grinding mill in Mabioriar were burned to ashes, while some households were also reported burned down in a village called Lingeer. More than 250 cattle were also stolen during the incident.”

He said the attack quickly escalated into prolonged fighting between the two communities, leading to deaths, injuries, destruction of property, and cattle raiding across several villages.

The minister added that the state government responded immediately after receiving reports of the violence by coordinating with local authorities and deploying security forces to restore order.

“When the government of Warrap State learned of the incident, local authorities together with the state government immediately sent security personnel to de-escalate the tension and violence,” Wol said.

“I strongly condemn these cyclical attacks between the communities of Tonj. I also express my sincere condolences to the bereaved families and encourage our communities to remain calm while the government investigates the incident. The perpetrators shall be brought to book.”

Authorities say security forces remain deployed in the area as investigations continue and efforts are underway to track down those responsible for the attack.

The government has urged residents to maintain calm as tensions remain high in the affected communities.
