Three arrested over attempted sale of meat from dead cow in Juba county
Three people have been arrested in Juba County for allegedly attempting to sell meat from a cow that died before slaughter.
The suspects were apprehended while transporting the carcass from Nyamini to a butchery in Jebel, where they allegedly intended to sell it to local butchers, according to the county Department of Health.
A county health administrator said the cow had died earlier that morning and that authorities intervened after receiving information about its intended sale.
“That cow died in the morning; they were taking it to Jebel butchery so that it can be sold there,” the administrator said.
She said the authorities arrested the cow’s owner and took the suspects into custody after determining that selling meat from animals that die before slaughter violates public health measures.
“According to health measures, dead animals are not to be sold. So, we took necessary measures. We arrested the owner of the cow, and they are in custody now,” he said.
The administrator added that authorities would consider further action following the arrests.
“Tomorrow, we will consider what needs to be done,” she said.
The incident has raised concerns about food safety and the potential health risks associated with consuming meat from animals that die under unknown or unsafe circumstances.
Juba County authorities say they are committed to preventing unsafe meat from reaching local markets and protecting public health.
