Crackdown in GPAA: 12 arrested, seized narcotics publicly destroyed in Pibor

Security forces in the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) have arrested twelve suspected drug dealers as regional authorities step up targeted operations against the distribution and consumption of illicit substances.

The suspects were apprehended during a security sweep targeting networks dealing in Tramadol, crystal methamphetamine, and marijuana within Pibor Town. Following the operation, a quantity of the confiscated narcotics was publicly burned in Pibor in the presence of GPAA Chief Administrator Gola Boyoi Gola.

Speaking to Eye Radio, GPAA Information Minister Jacob Werchum confirmed that the operation forms part of a broader government initiative to safeguard communities—particularly the youth—from the growing threats of drug abuse and trafficking.

“The government of the Greater Pibor Administrative Area launched a crackdown on harmful drug dealers and those found in possession of illegal drugs in Pibor Town,” Werchum stated.

“The operation focused on individuals involved in the distribution and consumption of harmful drugs, including Tramadol, crystals, and marijuana. A quantity of these drugs was confiscated and burned in an open area within Pibor Town in the presence of the Chief Administrator.”

Werchum emphasized that security forces will sustain operations against illegal drug networks across the administrative area. He called on residents to actively assist law enforcement by reporting suspected dealers and suspicious activities within their neighborhoods.

The operation in Pibor mirrors similar security interventions across South Sudan, where national and state authorities have raised alarms over rising drug abuse among young people.

All twelve suspects remain in custody and are expected to face legal proceedings as investigations continue.
