Displaced families in Arilo Payam need urgent aid after village attack – Chief

The Chief of Arilo Payam in Imehejek Administrative Area of Eastern Equatoria State is appealing for humanitarian assistance for displaced families following an attack by gunmen allegedly from a neighboring community.

Speaking to Eye Radio Monday morning, August 31, Chief Peter Lopee stated that over two hundred displaced people who have sought refuge in churches and schools are in dire need of aid.

“Over 200 people are living in churches and schools without food assistance, and we call on the state government to help the displaced people and maintain security in the area,” Chief Lopee told Eye Radio.

This came after local authorities are calling for calm following attacks in some villages during an ongoing membership registration exercise for the SPLM.

According to a press statement seen by Eye Radio, Tenet Community in Juba stated that at approximately 1:00 p.m., Nyaro village in Leteji Boma, Lafon County, was attacked by individuals allegedly from Dorik and some villages of the Lopit community.

According to the press release, the attack resulted in the burning of more than 10 households and the displacement of hundreds of Nyaro villagers.

Efforts by Eye Radio to reach the area administrator for comment were unsuccessful by the time of publication. With hundreds seeking shelter in public structures, local leaders continue to urge calm while awaiting external relief.
