One of South Sudan’s top economists says the Salva Kiir government must act at once to improve security.

Ahmed Morjan, who is also a lecturer at Juba University, says oil revenue will help the nation for many years to come.

But the World Bank says it would be wrong to rely on oil alone, and Mr. Morjan agrees. He also told Eye Radio that other sectors of the “economy must also be developed, and agriculture is vital.”

Mr. Morjan says the most immediate government priority must be to improve security in South Sudan, because that will encourage more investment.

He says other priorities must be unifying all the people of the nation, and improving infrastructure throughout South Sudan.

He says there are many challenges facing the government, but better security must be top of the list.

Mr. Morjan is also calling for a big jump in the amount of money being directed into agriculture. He says it is vital to diversify the economy, for when the oil runs out.
