EES plans to disarm armed civilians

Authorities in Torit County of Eastern Equatoria State say they will disarm the people in the county to stop revenge killing.

Last week, 12 people were killed in a revenge attack along the Torit-Omorwo road.

The commissioner of Torit, German Charles says killing of innocent people is not acceptable by the government.

He told Eye Radio the disarmament is to ensure fighting does not continue after reconciliation processes.

“Although we have tried to make peace among them, they may voluntary accept for peace but nobody knows what is in their hearts,” said added Mr Charles.

Mr. Charles urged the people in his County to cooperate with the government during the disarmament process in order to hold the suspects accountable.

There is presence of firearms in the hands of the civilians, particularly the livestock keepers, according to officials. It’s not clear how they acquired them.
