Elections Commission takes awareness campaign to Juba streets ahead of civic education

The National Elections Commission has launched an awareness campaign ahead of the official start of its civic and voter education campaign tomorrow, marking the beginning of pre-election activities before the planned December 2026 polls.

On Sunday, the commission conducted a roadshow across several streets in Juba using a vehicle mounted with loudspeakers and personnel delivering voter awareness messages.

The vehicle, accompanied by rows of boda-bodas, headed to Rambo Public Square in Juba, where the civic and voter education campaign will officially be launched on Monday.

The campaign is one of several activities expected to precede the elections as electoral institutions intensify preparations for the polls.

The NEC said the campaign is a key part of its election preparations and is intended to promote civic awareness and educate voters on the electoral process ahead of the December polls.

The launch comes days after President Salva Kiir signed into law the amended 2018 Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS), following its passage by parliament.

The amendments delinked the population census and permanent constitution-making process from the elections, removing legal obstacles that had required both processes to be completed before voting.

The changes have cleared the legal path for the conduct of elections under the December 2026 electoral timetable.

The expected December 22, 2026 general elections will be the first since South Sudan gained independence in 2011.
