Five soldiers killed in attack on SSPDF base in Upper Nile – official

The Minister of Information in Upper Nile State says five servicemen have been killed following an attack on an SSPDF base in Papuojo Boma, Tonga Payam of Panyikang County by what he described as a group of unknown gunmen who fled towards Jonglei State.

Peter Ngwojo Akwiny said the attack occurred at about 5:30 a.m. on Sunday.

“Around 5:30 in an area called Papuojo. Papuojo is a Boma in Tonga Payam of Panyikang County. A group of unknown gunmen attacked the base of SSPDF there. SSPDF Division 2, Agwelek. And as a result, five soldiers have been lost in the base. And then this group also crossed to the side of Jonglei. They went back to that area. They are not known up to now,” he explained.

Ngwojo said SSPDF forces have since repelled the attackers, who crossed into neighbouring Jonglei State.

He added that the attackers could be affiliated with the SPLA-IO, although investigations are still ongoing to establish their identity.

“The government of Upper Nile State said we condemn it. If those people are from IO, we are urging them it is not the time that they can attack the soldiers of the government. Because we are ahead of elections now, it is not good. They are trying their best to also exploit the instability in the area,” he said.

The spokesperson condemned the attack, saying communities in Panyikang County are preparing for elections.

He said SSPDF Division Two has taken measures to secure the area and ensure stability so residents can continue their normal activities.
