Foreign Minister, UN Envoy discuss Abyei security and slections

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, James Pitia Morgan, has discussed the security and political situation in the Abyei Administrative Area with the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Guang Cong.

The two officials met on Thursday.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the discussions focused on the current political and security situation in Abyei.

They also discussed Abyei’s participation in the forthcoming general elections, the implementation of the Abyei Protocol, and the role of the United Nations in supporting peace and stability.

The meeting comes days after Sudan protested the inclusion of Abyei as one of the constituencies in the December 2026 general elections.

Sudan argued that Abyei’s participation in the elections violates agreements between South Sudan and Sudan governing the status of the disputed oil-rich region.

However, South Sudan maintains that Abyei’s participation in the elections is not new, stressing that it is consistent with the constitutions of both countries and the Abyei Protocol under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

Minister Morgan reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working closely with the United Nations and regional partners to advance peace, stability and the full implementation of the Abyei Protocol.

For his part, Guang Cong reiterated the United Nations’ readiness to continue engaging with the Government of South Sudan in support of lasting peace and stability in the Abyei Administrative Area.
