How cholera swept across Unity State, killing 45 and infecting over 6,840 people

The latest cholera outbreak has spread across all seven counties of Unity State, killing 45 people and infecting 6,844, according to state health authorities.

Since the outbreak began earlier this year, the disease has spread rapidly across the state, with Rubkona, Mayom, and Koch emerging as the hardest-hit counties.

Rubkona has recorded by far the highest number of infections, making it the epicentre of the outbreak.

According to the State Minister of Health, Jal Puok, Rubkona County has recorded 4,790 cases, followed by Mayom with 2,031 cases, while Koch has reported 23 cases.

“These issues of cholera has been ongoing in Unity State. It has reached to all seven counties in Unity State and in which the most affected country is Rubkona County followed by Mayon because the total of Rubkona is 4,790 followed by Mayon which is 2,031 and the least County is Koch which is 23, that is the least county,” he said.

Rubkona, home to the Unity State capital, Bentiu, continues to report new infections.

In the past 24 hours, the county recorded 63 new cases, with 32 patients discharged and 21 still receiving treatment.

“For the past 24 hours Rubkona has recorded 63 cases in which 32 are being discharge and 21 are still on the care. Yes, there are death cases but past 24 hours there is no death cases. As per total we have 45 death cases since the beginning of this year 2026,” he said.

Health officials say 45 people have died from cholera in Unity State since the beginning of 2026, although no deaths were reported in the previous 24 hours.

To slow the spread of the disease, health authorities are conducting awareness campaigns in affected communities and encouraging residents to adopt preventive measures.

Puok urged residents to maintain proper hygiene, use safe drinking water, and seek medical attention as soon as cholera symptoms appear.
