Kiir orders action on roads, water and peacebuilding after Bahr el Ghazal tour

President Salva Kiir has directed government officials to prioritize road infrastructure, access to clean water, and peacebuilding efforts following concerns raised by communities during a recent tour of the Bahr el Ghazal region.

The directive came after Vice President and Chairperson of the Service Cluster Hussein Abdelbagi Akol briefed the President on Wednesday on findings from his visit to several areas in the region.

According to the Vice President, communities identified poor road connectivity as one of their most urgent challenges. They said inadequate transport links continue to affect movement, trade, and access to essential services.

Residents also raised concerns over limited access to clean and safe drinking water, particularly in farming areas where many families have relocated to engage in agricultural activities.

The Vice President further highlighted the need to strengthen peacebuilding initiatives in border areas inhabited by the Dinka Malual, Misseriya, and Rizigat communities.

The briefing also covered broader socio-economic issues, including youth and women empowerment and the need to create more employment opportunities.

In response, President Kiir directed Vice President Hussein and Minister of Presidential Affairs Africano Mande Gedima to coordinate government interventions and regularly update his office on progress made in addressing the concerns.

The meeting reaffirmed the government’s commitment to responding to priorities raised by communities and advancing development, service delivery, and peacebuilding efforts across the country.
