Nasir trial: Defence says Brig. Gen. Kamilo Gatmai denied medical care

The lead defence lawyer in the ongoing Nasir trial has told the special court that the sixth defendant, Brigadier General Kamilo Gatmai Kel, has been denied access to medical care after falling ill.

Geri Raimondo Legge told the three-judge panel on Wednesday that detention authorities prevented his client from seeing a doctor.

He asked the court to allow Brigadier General Kamilo to receive medical attention.

However, the presiding judge, Dr. James Alala, directed the defence team to submit a written request seeking permission for the defendant to receive appropriate medical treatment.

Advocate Geri argued that the matter was urgent and did not require a written request. But the court maintained that the request must be submitted in writing.

In its previous session, the court also restricted the defence team from meeting Dr. Riek Machar and other SPLM/A-IO detainees without prior approval.

Brigadier General Kamilo and seven other defendants are facing trial over the attack on the Nasir military garrison.

The prosecution has charged suspended First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar and seven co-accused with murder, conspiracy, terrorism, treason, and crimes against humanity over the March 2025 clashes in Nasir County.

Prosecutors allege that SPLM/A-IO-linked forces and the White Army attacked an SSPDF base in Nasir, killing 257 soldiers, including Maj. Gen. David Majur Dak, and destroying military equipment.

Machar remains under house arrest, while the other accused are detained by the National Security Service in Juba.
