South Sudan’s National Legislature has passed the National Elections Act, 2012 (Amendment) Bill, 2026, paving the way for the legislation to be presented to President Salva Kiir for assent.

The amended law contains provisions allowing the incumbent President to remain in office with full constitutional powers throughout the election period.

It also provides for the removal of the First Vice President and other Vice Presidents three months before the elections.

The passage of the bill marks another step in the legal preparations for the country’s planned December 2026 elections.

The legislation will now be submitted to the President for assent before it can come into force as law.
