NEC head calls for support to expand voter education campaign

The National Elections Commission has called on political parties, civil society organizations, traditional leaders and international partners to support a nationwide civic and voter education campaign ahead of South Sudan’s December 2026 general elections.

Speaking in Juba during the launch of the campaign, Commission Chairperson Professor Abednego Akok said the initiative aims to provide citizens with accurate information on voter registration, voting procedures, ballot secrecy and their rights and responsibilities.

Professor Akok said the campaign is non-partisan and is designed to ensure all eligible citizens understand and participate in the electoral process.

“It is not a campaign for a political party, an individual leader, a region or a community. It belongs to every citizen of the Republic,” Professor Akok said.

He said the programme will focus on reaching women, youth, persons with disabilities, displaced communities and other groups that may face barriers to participating in elections.

“It will provide citizens with clear and accurate information on the election process, including voter eligibility, voter registration, voting procedures, the secrecy of the ballot and the rights and responsibilities of voters,” he said.

Professor Akok also urged international partners, including the United Nations and the African Union, to support efforts to ensure citizens are informed ahead of the polls.

The Commission said the voter education campaign is aimed at promoting inclusive and peaceful participation as South Sudan prepares for the December 2026 elections.
