Save the Children responds to images of branded vehicle used by armed actors

Save the Children has confirmed that a vehicle seen in widely circulated social media images being used by armed actors in Akobo County, Jonglei State, is one of four vehicles that were seized from the humanitarian organisation earlier this year.

Images circulating online appear to show the organisation’s branded pickup truck mounted with a heavy weapon. In a statement issued in response to the images, Save the Children said the vehicle had not been under its control since it was forcibly taken in January 2026.

“Save the Children is aware of media reports and images being circulated on social media showing a vehicle displaying our branding and being used by armed actors,” the organisation said.

In a statement to Eye Radio newsroom on Thursday, the agency said the vehicle was one of four taken before armed groups looted and burned its field office and destroyed its Primary Health Care Centre in Walgak, Akobo County, in early February.

“Since the seizure, the vehicles have not been under Save the Children’s control or operation,” the statement said.

The humanitarian organisation condemned the use of its assets by armed groups.

“We strongly condemn the misuse of humanitarian assets and reiterate that Save the Children does not support or facilitate the activities of any armed actor,” the statement said.

The organisation added that it remains committed to the humanitarian principles of neutrality, independence and impartiality while providing assistance to vulnerable children and families in South Sudan.

Save the Children suspended its operations in Walgak following the attacks in February, which forced the evacuation of about 30 staff members and disrupted essential health services for hundreds of people.

The organisation has called on all parties to the conflict to respect international humanitarian law and protect humanitarian personnel and assets.
