South Sudan government dissolution: Who is in and who is out
President Salva Kiir Mayardit has dissolved the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (R-TGoNU) and relieved the First Vice President and the four other Vice Presidents from their positions.
WHO IS OUT
The following Vice Presidents have been relieved:
- Dr. Riek Machar Teny – First Vice President
- James Wani Igga – Vice President for Economic Cluster
- Taban Deng Gai – Vice President for Infrastructure Cluster
- Hussein Abdelbagi Akol – Vice President for Service Cluster
- Rebecca Nyandeng Garang – Vice President for Gender and Youth Cluster
The Council of Ministers has also been dissolved, meaning the 35 national ministers and their deputies are out of office.
The Transitional National Legislature has also been dissolved, including the Transitional National Legislative Assembly and the Council of States.
At the state level, all governors of the 10 states and the Chief Administrators of the three administrative areas have been relieved.

President Salva Kiir remains President and has appointed a caretaker government to run the country ahead of the December 22, 2026 elections.

In summary, the R-TGoNU structure has been dissolved and replaced by a caretaker government. President Kiir remains in office, while the former Vice Presidents, ministers, legislators, governors and administrators have been relieved of their positions with some of the reappointed to the same portfolio .
The caretaker government is expected to oversee the country as South Sudan moves toward the scheduled December 22, 2026 general elections.
