The SPLM has held a joint extraordinary meeting of the Political Bureau and the National Liberation Council in the aftermath of the unrest.

The meeting was chaired by President Salva Kiir, the chairman of the SPLM, at the Presidential Palace in Juba this morning.

Vice President James Wani Igga, who attended the recent ordinary summit of the heads of States and Government of the African Union, briefed participants on some resolutions of the Addis meeting:

“We called on both parties to address the alleged human rights violations, abuses and crimes in line with applicable international laws,” said Mr Wani, “and cooperate in the implementation of the decisions of the AU Peace and Security Council reached in Banjul [Gambia].”

“Before the IGAD, Security Council also met in the AU there. So we also have resolutions to that effect.  So point number 10, which I said is the most important, instructed the special envoys to establish an initial Monitoring and Verification Mechanism’s presence in South Sudan, which can facilitate the speedy operationalization of the full monitoring mechanism to develop a framework for an inclusive dialogue towards resolution of the crisis and underlying causes.”

Mr. Igga also urged the SPLM to engage other political parties in dialogue in order to solve national issues of concern:

“To organize a series of public consultations with South Sudanese actors with the aim of generating input for a political dialogue framework, consultations should include political parties and this is what we did yesterday and we’ll continue to do so.

“So, you SPLM let us engage all the political parties and bring them on board so that we have one solid position..”

Mr. Igga added that when the negotiations successfully end, the S-P-L-M will call for a National Convention to decide on its outcome.

He also said the SPLM will call for a National Healing and Reconciliation Conference.
