Tanzania’s VP Emmanuel Nchimbi resigns less than a year after taking office

Tanzanian Vice President Dr. Emmanuel John Nchimbi has announced his intention to step down from his post and fully retire from public life, with his departure scheduled for September 4, 2026.

Local media reports reveal that Nchimbi submitted an official resignation letter dated Tuesday, August 25, to President Samia Suluhu Hassan. His decision relies on legal mechanisms set out in the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania—specifically Article 50(2)(c) alongside Article 149(2)—which address voluntary departures for constitutional officeholders.

In his statement, Nchimbi noted that on August 25, 2026, he formally notified President Hassan of his choice to conclude his political and public career. He further confirmed that, under the referenced constitutional clauses, his resignation from the vice presidency will formally take effect on September 4, 2026.

Recalling his initial appointment, the outgoing leader referred back to a personal pledge made to President Hassan on August 27, 2025. At that time, he committed to serving the administration and the nation with complete integrity, while promising to step aside without hesitation if the President ever sought a change in leadership.

Explaining his departure, Nchimbi stated he became fully convinced that President Hassan favored a new direction for the role, prompting him to honor his initial agreement and step aside.

Nchimbi expressed his gratitude to President Hassan and the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party for the opportunity to serve. He also extended his appreciation to the citizens of Tanzania for their support throughout his time in public office, assuring them that he would remain a dedicated citizen.

His exit occurs under a year after taking office, having run alongside President Hassan as her official running mate in Tanzania’s November 2025 general election.
