Twic detains teachers over girl pupil’s cash

• • 1 min read

Several teachers in Twic State have been detained for allegedly taking some of the money primary schoolgirls are supposed to receive.

The arrests happened on Sunday in Wunrok County.

Each girl is entitled to receive more than 2,000 pounds to encourage them to continue their studies.

“This money is only for girls who are in the school and must be given as it is directed by GESS project,” said Nyayath Manyuat Kuot, state Minister of Education.

She said the detained staff are accused of different charges of fraud, adding that they will be taken to court soon.

However, Ms Kuot didn’t disclose how many teachers are under arrest.

“I’m warning the centers not to misuse money, or they will be answerable…,” she added.

According to a local community radio station in the area, representatives of the Girl Education in South Sudan, which provides the motivation cash, declined to comment on the matter.

On Monday, some parents in Juba complained to Eye Radio about a similar case involving the schoolgirls’ cash.

However, school authorities denied any wrongdoing, saying they were “falsely accused”.
