Unity State traditional leader Gatmai Garang dies at an estimated age of 107

A renowned traditional leader in Mayiandit County in Unity State, Gatmai Garang Dol, has died at an estimated age of 107, according to the office of the state governor.

Governor Joseph Manytuil said Sultan Gatmai died on 20th August, 2026, at his residence in Thaker, Mayiandit County.

In a condolence message, Governor Manytuil described the late Sultan Gatmai as an elder, renowned opinion leader, peacemaker and traditional leader.

“Late Sultan Gatmai was an iconic leader, a liberator, and renowned peacemaker who served as Head Chief for Border Affairs since 1955 until his demise, that eventually builds durable peace across the common border between the Southern Unity, and neighboring communities in Lakes State,” he said in a statement.

He said Sultan Gatmai served as Head Chief for Border Affairs from 1955 until his death and played a key role in promoting peace along the common border between southern Unity State and neighbouring communities in Lakes State.

Governor Manytuil also said Sultan Gatmai played a proactive role in the Wunlit Peace Conference, which helped reconcile Gen. Salva Kiir and Dr Riek Machar Teny in 1999.

The governor expressed condolences to the family of Sultan Gatmai, the Haak community and the people of Unity State.

He said the late traditional leader’s legacy would continue to inspire future generations.
