The United Nations Mission in South Sudan says a contingent of 266 additional peacekeepers has arrived in South Sudan.

The UNMISS spokesperson, Ms Ariane Quentier, confirmed the arrival of the team to Eye Radio.

“Indeed two hundred and sixty six peacekeepers who arrived in South Sudan yesterday; for the time being, they are going to be deployed in Juba,” said Ms Quentier.

She added that the deployment is in line with UNSC’s move

“You may remember that on the 21st of December, the Security Council authorized the reinforcement of the troops in South Sudan – they authorized an additional 5,500 peacekeepers, and 343 police,” she explained

“When it comes to the police they all arrived in the following week and they have been dispatched to Bentiu, Malakal Bor and Juba.”

As a result of the latest deployment, there are now 12,500 peacekeepers in South Sudan and 1,323 police.

The Security Council also encouraged what it calls “inter-mission cooperation” for troops and assets to be transferred from other UN missions to UNMISS.
