Governor Manytuil orders GPOC to act after woman falls into oil waste pond
The woman was hospitalised after allegedly falling into the contaminated pond in Rubkona over the weekend.
The Governor of Unity State, Dr. Joseph Manytuil, has ordered the Greater Pioneer Operating Company (GPOC) to protect communities and the environment from oil pollution after a woman allegedly fell into a hazardous oil waste pond.
The woman was hospitalised after allegedly falling into the contaminated pond in Rubkona over the weekend.
GPOC operates oil fields in parts of Unity State.
Governor Manytuil issued the directive after visiting the victim at Bentiu State Hospital and inspecting the hazardous and unprotected oil waste pond in the Unity Oil Field.
He extended his sympathy to the affected family.
The governor instructed GPOC to protect the environment and prioritise the safety and well-being of communities living around oil-producing areas.
The Unity State government has also called on regulatory bodies to immediately investigate the incident, ensure accountability and seek justice for the affected woman.
