NEC Secretary General undergoes successful surgery in Nairobi

The Secretary General of South Sudan’s National Elections Commission, Gabriel Bol Deng Majok, is recovering in Nairobi, Kenya, after undergoing successful surgery following a leg injury.

The injury occurred during preparations for the launch of the civic and voter education campaign in Juba on July 26, 2026.

Speaking to Eye Radio on Sunday evening, National Elections Commission spokesperson George Lemi confirmed that Gabriel is currently in Nairobi receiving treatment.

“It is true that the Secretary General of the National Elections Commission had an injury during the campaign of civic and voter education, prior to the launching of the civic and voter education.”

Lemi said Gabriel has since undergone surgery in Nairobi. “He’s currently in Nairobi for treatment and he has undergone successful surgery in Nairobi.”

The commission spokesperson said the NEC is monitoring Gabriel’s recovery and has provided support during his treatment.

“He has undergone surgery and the commission is following and the commission has supported him.”

His confirmation follows a social media report claiming that senior petroleum officials visited the NEC Secretary General in hospital in Kenya.

The reported delegation was said to include the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Petroleum, Santino Ayuel Longar; Managing Director of Nile Petroleum Corporation, Emmanuel Athiei Ayual; and DPOC Vice President, Atak Santino Majak.

However, Lemi said he could not independently confirm the reported hospital visit. “However, I could not confirm the visit of the Petroleum Official to Secretary General in the hospital.”

He explained that he is currently in Juba and had not communicated with Gabriel since the morning.
