U.S. Embassy in South Sudan Stops Routine Visa Services

The U.S. Embassy in South Sudan has stopped providing routine visa services, following a decision by the U.S. Department of State to shift some visa operations in Africa to regional processing hubs.

The change took effect on August 1, 2026, and affects South Sudanese citizens and residents applying for U.S. visas.

The State Department says the realignment is part of a “long-standing practice” aimed at strengthening national security through more consistent “screening, vetting, and adjudication standards.”

South Sudanese applicants seeking nonimmigrant visas, including visitor, student and temporary work visas, must now schedule their appointments and pay the required visa fees at the U.S. Embassy in Kampala, Uganda, which has been designated as the new processing location.

The State Department says the move will also help “improve efficiency” and respond to changing U.S. immigration policy priorities.

However, immigrant visa applicants from South Sudan will continue to apply through the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya.

South Sudanese applicants are advised to check the U.S. Department of State’s official visa information for current requirements, appointment procedures and any updates to processing arrangements.
